At What Point Did Water Fountains Emerge?
At What Point Did Water Fountains Emerge? Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classic Greek documents into Latin. He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the model seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope instigated the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a practice which was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti.
The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had rebuilt.
Early Water Supply Techniques in The City Of Rome
Early Water Supply Techniques in The City Of Rome Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, began supplying the people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, even though they had counted on natural springs up until then.
Over this time period, there were only 2 other techniques capable of supplying water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill via the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. Throughout the length of the aqueduct’s channel were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. Although they were initially manufactured to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started out using the manholes to gather water from the channel, commencing when he acquired the property in 1543. Although the cardinal also had a cistern to accumulate rainwater, it couldn't produce enough water. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran beneath his residential property.
