The Impact of the Norman Invasion on Anglo Saxon Landscaping
The Impact of the Norman Invasion on Anglo Saxon Landscaping The advent of the Normans in the latter half of the 11th century substantially altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living.
The ability of the Normans exceeded the Anglo-Saxons' in architecture and agriculture at the time of the conquest. Nonetheless the Normans had to pacify the whole territory before they could concentrate on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were enormous stone structures constructed in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on learning offensive and defensive strategies. Gardening, a quiet occupation, was unfeasible in these unproductive fortifications. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is symbolized in Berkeley Castle, which is conceivably the most untouched example we have. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. A spacious terrace meant for walking and as a means to stop enemies from mining below the walls runs around the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.
Water Features Lost to History
Water Features Lost to History As initially developed, water fountains were crafted to be functional, guiding water from creeks or reservoirs to the inhabitants of cities and settlements, where the water could be used for cooking, washing, and drinking. To generate water flow through a fountain until the end of the 1800’s, and produce a jet of water, mandated gravity and a water source such as a creek or lake, positioned higher than the fountain. Typically used as monuments and commemorative edifices, water fountains have inspired people from all over the globe throughout the ages. When you enjoy a fountain today, that is not what the 1st water fountains looked like. Created for drinking water and ceremonial functions, the 1st fountains were basic carved stone basins. The oldest stone basins are thought to be from around 2000 BC. Early fountains used in ancient civilizations depended on gravity to manipulate the movement of water through the fountain. Drinking water was supplied by public fountains, long before fountains became decorative public monuments, as striking as they are practical.
Fountains with flowery decoration started to appear in Rome in approximately 6 BC, commonly gods and creatures, made with stone or bronze. The people of Rome had an elaborate system of aqueducts that supplied the water for the many fountains that were placed throughout the urban center.
