Archaic Greek Artistry: Garden Statuary Up until the Archaic Greeks provided the first freestanding sculpture, a remarkable success, carvings had mostly been completed in walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were made to appear stiff and commonly had foot forward; the males were healthy, powerful, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC.
