"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Garden Statuary
Archaic Greeks were well known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Youthful, appealing male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the statues, or kouros figures. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and nude. In around 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. A huge age of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about more forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a greater comprehension of people and customs outside of Greece. Equivalent to many other moments of historical conflict, disputes were common, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
