Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Fountains
Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Fountains There are any number of celebrated Roman fountains in its city center. One of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed, created and constructed nearly all of them. Also a city builder, he had capabilities as a water feature designer, and remnants of his life's work are apparent throughout the avenues of Rome. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. The juvenile Bernini was an exceptional worker and earned compliments and patronage of significant painters as well as popes. At first he was celebrated for his sculpting skills. An expert in historical Greek engineering, he used this knowledge as a base and melded it seamlessly with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. Though a variety of artists impacted his artistic endeavors, Michelangelo influenced him the most.
Bernini's Early Showpieces
Bernini's Early Showpieces
Bernini's earliest fountain, named Barcaccia, is a masterful work of art found at the bottom of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, this spot is filled with Roman locals and tourists alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company. One of the city’s most stylish meeting places are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would undoubtedly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII commissioned what was to be the earliest water fountain of the master's career. Depicted in the fountain's design is a great vessel gradually sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. The great flooding of the Tevere that blanketed the whole region with water in the 16th was memorialized by this momentous fountain as recorded by documents dating back to this period. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting period of time, in 1665 Bernini traveled to France.
