The Source of Modern Day Outdoor Garden Fountains Himself a highly educated man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of ancient documents from their original Greek into Latin. He undertook the beautification of Rome to turn it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Changes and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
Nearly all sculptors were remunerated by the temples to adorn the intricate columns and archways with renderings of the gods right up until the time period came to a close and many Greeks began to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more typical for sculptors to portray ordinary men and women as well....
