"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Garden Statuary The primitive Greeks manufactured the first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Younger, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were made to appear stiff and typically had foot forward; the males were vigorous, strong, and naked. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC.
A huge time of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about more forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a higher comprehension of people and cultures outside of Greece.
