Bernini's First Showpieces
Bernini's First Showpieces
The Barcaccia, a beautiful water fountain built at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest water fountain. Roman residents and site seers who appreciate conversation as well as being the company of others still go to this spot. Today, the city streets around Bernini's water fountain are a trendy area where people go to meet, something which the artist would have been pleased to learn. In about 1630, the great artist built the first water fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. A large ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean is the fountain's main theme. According to 16th century reports, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was commemorated by the magnificent fountain. In 1665, France was graced by Bernini's one-and-only prolonged voyage outside of Italy.

Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems
Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in Rome, citizens who lived on hillsides had to go further down to get their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone techniques around at the time to supply water to areas of greater elevation.
To supply water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they utilized the emerging tactic of redirecting the motion from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. Pozzi, or manholes, were engineered at standard stretches along the aqueduct’s channel. The manholes made it more straightforward to clean the channel, but it was also possible to use buckets to pull water from the aqueduct, as we discovered with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he possessed the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. The cistern he had constructed to gather rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water demands. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat directly below his property, and he had a shaft opened to give him accessibility.
