"Old School" Water Fountain Designers Water feature designers were multi-talented individuals from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century, often serving as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and highly educated scholars all in one person. Leonardo da Vinci, a Renaissance artist, was renowned as an inspired genius, inventor and scientific expert.
With his tremendous curiosity regarding the forces of nature, he explored the properties and motion of water and carefully recorded his findings in his now famed notebooks. Early Italian water fountain builders converted private villa configurations into inspiring water showcases complete with symbolic meaning and natural elegance by coupling imagination with hydraulic and horticultural expertise. The brilliance in Tivoli were provided by the humanist Pirro Ligorio, who was renowned for his skill in archeology, engineering and garden design. Well versed in humanistic subjects and classical scientific readings, other fountain creators were masterminding the excellent water marbles, water features and water pranks for the various lands around Florence.

The great 16th century flooding of the Tevere, which left the entire region inundated with water, was memorialized by the fountain according to documents from the time. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting time period, in 1665 Bernini voyaged to France.
