Gian Bernini's Public Fountains
Gian Bernini's Public Fountains
There are lots of celebrated Roman water fountains in its city center. One of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, nearly all of them were designed, conceived and built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His expertise as a water feature designer and also as a city architect, are visible all through the roads of Rome. Bernini's father, a celebrated Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately relocated in Rome, to thoroughly express their art in the form of community water features and water fountains. An exemplary workman, Bernin received encouragement and the the backing of popes and well known artists. At the beginning he was renowned for his sculptural skills. He used his ability and melded it gracefully with Roman marble, most significantly in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most profound effect on him, both personally and professionally.
The Source of Today's Fountains
The Source of Today's Fountains Hundreds of classic Greek documents were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent repair at the behest of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental celebratory fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a custom which was revived by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
