The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statuary
The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statuary Archaic Greeks were known for developing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were made to appear rigid and always had foot forward; the males were vigorous, sturdy, and nude. In 650 BC, life-sized models of the kouroi began to be observed. A significant era of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about new forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a greater appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece.
Comparable to many other moments of historical unrest, arguments were common, and there were battles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
Anglo Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Anglo Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Anglo-Saxons experienced great modifications to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But before concentrating on home-life or having the occasion to consider domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire population. Because of this, castles were cruder structures than monasteries: Monasteries were usually important stone buildings located in the biggest and most fertile valleys, while castles were built on windy crests where their citizens dedicated time and space to tasks for offense and defense. Gardening, a quiet occupation, was impracticable in these fruitless fortifications. The purest example of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent in modern times is Berkeley Castle. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. A monumental terrace serves as a deterrent to invaders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. A scenic bowling green, enveloped in grass and surrounded by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.
