Architectural Statuary in Early Greece
Sculptors ornamented the lavish columns and archways with renderings of the gods until the time came to a close and more Greeks had begun to think of their theology as superstitious rather than sacred; at that instant, it grew to be more accepted for sculptors be paid to show ordinary people as well. Portraiture started to be commonplace as well, and would be welcomed by the Romans when they defeated the Greeks, and on occasion well-off households would commission a representation of their progenitors to be placed inside their huge familial tombs. A point of aesthetic enhancement, the use of sculpture and alternate art forms transformed during the Greek Classical period, so it is inexact to say that the arts served only one function. Whether to fulfill a visual craving or to commemorate the figures of religion, Greek sculpture was actually an artistic method in the ancient world, which may well be what draws our focus today.
Back Story of Garden Fountains
Back Story of Garden Fountains
Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classical Greek texts into Latin. It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. Building a mostra, an imposing celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had reconstructed.
Bernini's Earliest Masterpieces
Bernini's Earliest Masterpieces One can find Bernini's very first masterpiece, the Barcaccia water fountain, at the foot of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. Roman residents and site seers who enjoy conversation as well as being the company of others still flood this spot. One of the city’s most fashionable meeting spots are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would certainly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. The master's first fountain of his professional life was built at around 1630 at the request of Pope Urbano VIII. The fountain’s central theme is based on a massive vessel slowly sinking into the Mediterranean. Period reports dating back to the 16th century show that the fountain was constructed as a monument to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. In what turned out to be his only extended absence from Italy, Bernini {journeyed | traveled] to France in 1665.
