Bernini's First Masterpieces
Bernini's First Masterpieces
The Barcaccia, a beautiful fountain constructed at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest fountain. This area continues to be filled with Roman locals and visitors who like to exchanging gossip or going over the day's news. One of the city’s most fashionable meeting spots are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would certainly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. In about 1630, the great master built the first water fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. The fountain’s central theme is based on an enormous ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean. According to 16th century texts, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was commemorated by the tremendous fountain. In 1665, France was graced by Bernini's only extended journey outside of Italy.

The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror.
