"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Large Statuary

"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Large Statuary The primitive Greeks developed the first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, sculptures of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the greater part of the sculptures. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to represent beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and unclothed. In about 650 BC, the varieties of the kouroi became life-sized. Throughout the Archaic time, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new types of government, expressions of art, and a greater awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. During this time and other periods of historic tumultuousness, clashes often took place, including battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.

Rome’s Ingenious Water Transport Systems

Rome’s Ingenious Water Transport Systems Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Rome, inhabitants who lived on hillsides had to travel even further down to collect their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people dwelling at greater elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. To supply water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they implemented the emerging process of redirecting the movement from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. Pozzi, or manholes, were made at standard intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Though they were originally designed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started out using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, starting when he acquired the property in 1543. The cistern he had constructed to obtain rainwater wasn’t adequate to meet his water needs.Rome’s Ingenious Water Transport Systems 90306980934.jpg Through an opening to the aqueduct that flowed below his property, he was set to suit his water needs.
