The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. As a strategy of deterring attackers from tunneling beneath the walls, an immense terrace surrounds the building. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and bordered by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.

Around 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be seen. During this time and other durations of historic tumultuousness, encounters often took place, including battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.
