Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Problems Rome’s first raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, residents living at higher elevations had to rely on local streams for their water.
When aqueducts or springs weren’t accessible, people dwelling at raised elevations turned to water taken from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by way of the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it simpler and easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to satisfy his needs. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his property.
