Early Crete & The Minoans: Fountains
Early Crete & The Minoans: Fountains Various types and designs of conduits have been uncovered through archaeological excavations on the island of Crete, the cradle of Minoan society. They not merely helped with the water sources, they extracted rainwater and wastewater as well. Stone and terracotta were the materials of choice for these channels. There were terracotta pipes, both round and rectangle-shaped as well as canals made from the same components. Among these were terracotta conduits which were U shaped or a shortened, cone-like shape which have only appeared in Minoan society.
A Chronicle of Fountains
A Chronicle of Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to make it into the model seat of the Christian world. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the behest of the Pope. Building a mostra, an imposing commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain.
