He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had rebuilt.

Anglo Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons experienced extraordinary changes to their daily lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. Engineering and gardening were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation.Anglo Saxon Landscapes Time Norman Conquest 8824885977.jpg But yet there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and decoration until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Because of this, castles were cruder structures than monasteries: Monasteries were usually significant stone buildings set in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were constructed on windy crests where their inhabitants devoted time and space to projects for offense and defense. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the peaceful avocation of farming. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most pristine model of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. It is said that the keep was developed during William the Conqueror's time. A spacious terrace recommended for exercising and as a means to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs about the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an old yew hedge cut into the form of crude battlements.
