Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Solutions
Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, residents residing at higher elevations had to depend on local springs for their water. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people dwelling at higher elevations turned to water pulled from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. While these manholes were provided to make it easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to extract water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t good enough to meet his needs. Through an orifice to the aqueduct that flowed underneath his property, he was able to suit his water desires.
