The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues

The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues Archaic Greeks were well known for developing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were formed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot stretched out of a fixed forward-facing pose and the male statues were always unclothed, with a compelling, powerful shape. The kouroi became life-sized starting in 650 BC. During the Archaic time, a big time of changes, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. Wars like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars involving city-states are indicatory of the tumultuous nature of the time, which was similar to other periods of historical upset. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.

Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems

Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems Rome’s 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants living at higher elevations had to depend on local creeks for their water. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technologies available at the time to supply water to locations of greater elevation. Starting in the sixteenth century, a brand new strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to generate water to Pincian Hill. During its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were placed at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were developed to make it easier to protect the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552.Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems 56808341059002.jpg It seems that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to fulfill his needs. To give himself with a more efficient way to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened, offering him access to the aqueduct below his property.
