Bernini's Early Masterpieces

Bernini's Early Masterpieces The Barcaccia, Bernini's very first fountain, is a magnificent chef d'oeuvre built at the foot of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, this spot is flooded with Roman locals and travelers alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company. Bernini would undoubtedly have been happy to know that people still flock to what has become one the city's most fashionable areas, that around his amazing water fountain. The master's first fountain of his career was built at around 1630 at the request of Pope Urbano VIII. A large vessel slowly sinking into the Mediterranean is the fountain's main theme. According to 16th century documents, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was commemorated by the magnificent fountain. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a lengthy period of time, in 1665 Bernini voyaged to France.

Water Delivery Solutions in Historic Rome

Water Delivery Solutions in Historic Rome Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, residents residing at higher elevations had to depend on local streams for their water.Water Delivery Solutions Historic Rome 9013290522.jpg Over this period, there were only two other technologies capable of supplying water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. In the early sixteenth century, the city began to utilize the water that flowed underground through Acqua Vergine to supply drinking water to Pincian Hill. Spanning the length of the aqueduct’s route were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. Whilst these manholes were created to make it less difficult to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. He didn’t get sufficient water from the cistern that he had established on his residential property to gather rainwater. To give himself with a more useful means to obtain water, he had one of the manholes exposed, giving him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
