Anglo-Saxon Gardens During the Norman Conquest
Anglo-Saxon Gardens During the Norman Conquest The Anglo-Saxon way of life was dramatically changed by the appearance of the Normans in the later eleventh century.
At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. However the Normans had to pacify the overall territory before they could concentrate on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were massive stone structures assembled in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on learning offensive and defensive strategies. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the peaceful avocation of gardening. Berkeley Castle is possibly the most complete model in existence at present of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. It is said that the keep was introduced during William the Conqueror's time. As a strategy of deterring assailants from tunneling under the walls, an immense terrace encircles the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and surrounded by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.
The Hellenic Republic: Cultural Sculpture
The Hellenic Republic: Cultural Sculpture Most sculptors were paid by the temples to enhance the intricate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods until the stage came to a close and countless Greeks began to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more common for sculptors to represent ordinary people as well. Portraiture, which would be recognized by the Romans upon their annexation of Greek society became conventional as well, and wealthy families would at times commission a portrayal of their forebears to be added in enormous familial tombs. The usage of sculpture and other art forms varied through the many years of The Greek Classical period, a duration of creative progress when the arts had more than one goal. Greek sculpture is perhaps enticing to us nowadays as it was an avant-garde experiment in the ancient world, so it does not matter whether or not its original function was religious zeal or artistic enjoyment.
