The advent of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century considerably modified The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time period. A monumental terrace serves as a hindrance to invaders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an aged yew hedge trimmed into the shape of crude battlements.
