"Primitive" Greek Art: Large Statuary The Archaic Greeks developed the 1st freestanding statuary, an awesome achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are termed kouros figures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to look stiff and typically had foot in front; the males were vigorous, powerful, and nude. The kouroi became life-sized commencing in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they progressed into more polished forms of federal government and art, and gained more information and facts about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece. Nevertheless, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these challenges.
