Rome’s Early Water Delivery Systems

Rome’s Early Water Delivery Systems 4768317534.jpg Rome’s Early Water Delivery Systems With the building of the 1st elevated aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, people who lived on the city’s foothills no longer had to be dependent only on naturally-occurring spring water for their needs. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole technological innovations around at the time to supply water to segments of higher elevation. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique approach was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean portions to deliver water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were built at regular stretches along the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were developed to make it simpler and easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. He didn’t get enough water from the cistern that he had constructed on his property to gather rainwater. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran beneath his property.

Bernini's Fountains

Bernini's Fountains There are countless famous fountains in the city center of Rome. One of the most distinguished sculptors and artists of the 17th century, almost all of them were designed, conceptualized and constructed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He was also a city designer, in addition to his skills as a water fountain developer, and traces of his life's work are evident all through the streets of Rome. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. An excellent worker, the young Bernini received compliments and patronage of various popes and important designers. He was initially recognized for his sculpture.Bernini's Fountains 79828395647676.jpg An expert in historical Greek architecture, he utilized this knowledge as a base and melded it gracefully with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. He was influenced by many great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest impact on his work.

Anglo Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest

Anglo Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the 2nd half of the 11th century irreparably transformed The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. The expertise of the Normans exceeded the Anglo-Saxons' in architecture and farming at the time of the conquest.Anglo Saxon Grounds Norman Conquest 495443391.jpg However the Normans had to pacify the whole territory before they could concentrate on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Because of this, castles were cruder structures than monasteries: Monasteries were often significant stone buildings located in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were erected on windy crests where their residents dedicated time and space to projects for offense and defense. Gardening, a peaceful occupation, was impracticable in these fruitless fortifications. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is portrayed in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most unscathed example we have. The keep is reported to have been created during the time of William the Conqueror. As a strategy of deterring assailants from tunneling underneath the walls, an immense terrace surrounds the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an aged yew hedge trimmed into the figure of crude battlements.
