"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary The Archaic Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Youthful, ideal male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the statues, or kouros figures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to look stiff and commonly had foot forward; the males were vigorous, powerful, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an awesome time of change for the Greeks as they extended into new modes of government, formed unique expressions of art, and gained knowledge of the people and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the types of battles that emerged frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical transformation.

In Rome’s city center, there are countless celebrated fountains. One of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, almost all of them were designed, conceived and built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Also a city architect, he had skills as a fountain developer, and records of his life's work are noticeable throughout the avenues of Rome. A famous Florentine sculptor, Bernini's father guided his young son, and they ultimately went to Rome to fully exhibit their artwork, mainly in the form of public water fountains and water features. An exceptional employee, Bernin earned praise and the the backing of popes and well known artists. Initially he was celebrated for his sculpting skills. Most famously in the Vatican, he utilized a base of experience in classic Greek architecture and melded it effortlessly with Roman marble. Though many artists had an impact on his work, Michelangelo had the most profound effect.
