Back Story of Outdoor Garden Fountains

Back Story of Outdoor Garden Fountains The translation of hundreds of ancient Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 till 1455. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to embellish the beauty of the city. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a practice which was restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area previously filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. The water which eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain as well as the renown baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.

Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and naked. Around 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be observed. The Archaic period was an awesome time of transformation for the Greeks as they grew into new modes of government, formed novel expressions of art, and achieved information of the people and cultures outside of Greece. Similar to other times of historical conflict, arguments were common, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
