The Circulation of Outdoor Garden Fountain Engineering Knowledge in Europe
The Circulation of Outdoor Garden Fountain Engineering Knowledge in Europe
Instrumental to the development of scientific technology were the printed papers and illustrated books of the day. They were also the primary means of transmitting practical hydraulic information and fountain design ideas throughout Europe. An un-named French water feature engineer was an internationally famed hydraulic innovator in the later part of the 1500's. His know-how in making gardens and grottoes with incorporated and brilliant water attributes began in Italy and with mandates in Brussels, London and Germany. In France, towards the end of his life, he published “The Principle of Moving Forces”, a book which became the essential text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Updating vital hydraulic breakthroughs of classical antiquity, the publication also details modern hydraulic technologies. Dominant among these works were those of Archimedes, the creator of the water screw, a mechanical means of transferring water. Natural light heated the liquid in two hidden containers adjacent to the ornamental fountain were shown in an illustration. Activating the water feature is hot water that expands and rises to seal up the conduits. Models for pumps, water wheels, water attributes and garden ponds are also mentioned in the guide.
The Source of Modern Day Outdoor Fountains
The Source of Modern Day Outdoor Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the center of his objectives. In 1453 the Pope instigated the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The historical Roman custom of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Changes and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
Ancient Greece: Cultural Statuary
Ancient Greece: Cultural Statuary Traditionally, the vast majority of sculptors were paid by the temples to embellish the involved pillars and archways with renderings of the gods, but as the era came to a close it grew to be more accepted for sculptors to portray ordinary people as well because many Greeks had begun to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred. Portraiture started to be prevalent as well, and would be welcomed by the Romans when they conquered the Greeks, and on occasion well-off families would order a representation of their progenitors to be put inside their huge familial burial tombs. A point of artistic progression, the use of sculpture and other art forms transformed throughout the Greek Classical period, so it is not entirely accurate to assume that the arts served only one function. It may be the advanced quality of Greek sculpture that captivates our eye today; it was on a leading-edge practice of the classic world regardless of whether it was established for religious reasons or artistic pleasure.
