The Effect of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Garden Design
The Effect of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Garden Design
The Anglo-Saxon way of life was dramatically changed by the introduction of the Normans in the later eleventh century. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and decoration until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were enormous stone structures constructed in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on understanding offensive and defensive tactics. Gardening, a placid occupation, was impracticable in these unproductive fortifications. The best specimen of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent today is Berkeley Castle. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time period. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to assailants trying to dig under the castle walls. A scenic bowling green, covered in grass and enclosed by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.
