Anglo-Saxons encountered extraordinary adjustments to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. Architecture and gardening were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. Attributes of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece The initial freestanding statuary was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished success since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, statues of adolescent, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the greater part of the sculptures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were designed to appear rigid and typically had foot in front; the males were vigorous, powerful, and nude. The kouroi grew to be life-sized beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they evolved into more refined forms of federal government and art, and obtained more data about the peoples and cultures outside of Greece. Conflicts like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars among city-states are indicatory of the disruptive nature of the time period, which was similar to other periods of historical upset. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
