A Concise History of Early Outdoor Fountains

A Concise History of Early Outdoor Fountains As originally conceived, fountains were designed to be functional, directing water from creeks or aqueducts to the citizens of towns and villages, where the water could be utilized for cooking food, washing, and drinking. In the days before electric power, the spray of fountains was powered by gravity alone, commonly using an aqueduct or water supply located far away in the nearby hills. Commonly used as memorials and commemorative edifices, water fountains have inspired people from all over the world throughout the centuries. If you saw the very first fountains, you wouldn't recognize them as fountains. A stone basin, carved from rock, was the 1st fountain, used for holding water for drinking and religious purposes. 2000 BC is when the oldest known stone fountain basins were used. The force of gravity was the power source that controlled the initial water fountains. Drinking water was provided by public fountains, long before fountains became decorative public statues, as pretty as they are functional. Fountains with elaborate decoration started to show up in Rome in about 6 BC, commonly gods and creatures, made with natural stone or copper-base alloy. The City of Rome had an elaborate system of aqueducts that provided the water for the numerous fountains that were located throughout the city.
