Back Story of Garden Water Fountains
Back Story of Garden Water Fountains
Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of hundreds of age-old documents from their original Greek into Latin. In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to enhance the beauty of the city. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had transported fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Aspects of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece
Aspects of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were well known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing posture and the male statues were regularly nude, with a compelling, strong physique.
Around 650 BC, life-size forms of the kouroi began to be observed. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they progressed into more polished forms of federal government and art, and gained more information about the peoples and cultures outside of Greece. During this time and other periods of historical tumult, clashes often took place, most notably wars fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.
