Garden Water Fountain Builders Through HistoryGarden Water Fountain Builders History 762299662.jpg Water fountain designers were multi-talented people from the 16th to the late 18th century, often working as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and cultivated scholars all in one. Exemplifying the Renaissance artist as a imaginative master, Leonardo da Vinci worked as an innovator and scientific specialist. The forces of nature guided him to examine the properties and movement of water, and due to his fascination, he carefully captured his experiences in his now famed notebooks. Early Italian fountain builders converted private villa settings into inspiring water exhibits full of emblematic meaning and natural beauty by combining creativity with hydraulic and gardening talent. The humanist Pirro Ligorio supplied the vision behind the splendors in Tivoli and was renowned for his abilities in archeology, architecture and garden design. Other fountain designers, masterminding the phenomenal water marbles, water attributes and water antics for the many mansions near Florence, were tried and tested in humanistic subjects and classical scientific texts.

The Beginnings of Modern Wall Fountains

Beginnings Modern Wall Fountains 5251497227652962.jpg The Beginnings of Modern Wall Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek documents into Latin. It was important for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a custom which was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day site of the Trevi Fountain was once occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. Modifications and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
