Early Water Delivery Techniques in The City Of Rome

Early Water Delivery Techniques in The City Of Rome Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, began delivering the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had counted on natural springs up till then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technological innovations readily available at the time to supply water to locations of greater elevation. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill through the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. Pozzi, or manholes, were engineered at regular intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were created to make it less difficult to conserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to extract water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Though the cardinal also had a cistern to amass rainwater, it didn’t provide enough water. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his property.
