Classic Greece: The Roots of Outdoor Statue Design Nearly all sculptors were remunerated by the temples to enhance the intricate columns and archways with renderings of the gods right up until the time period came to a close and countless Greeks began to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more typical for sculptors to portray ordinary men and women as well. Greek sculpture is perhaps enticing to us all today seeing that it was an avant-garde experiment in the historic world, so it does not make a difference whether its original function was religious zeal or artistic pleasure.

The Garden Fountains

The Garden Fountains Water fountains were initially practical in purpose, used to deliver water from canals or springs to cities and villages, supplying the residents with fresh water to drink, wash, and cook with. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was required to pressurize the flow and send water spraying from the fountain's spout, a system without equal until the later half of the nineteenth century. The elegance and spectacle of fountains make them appropriate for traditional monuments. When you encounter a fountain nowadays, that is not what the very first water fountains looked like. Basic stone basins created from local stone were the very first fountains, used for religious ceremonies and drinking water. The earliest stone basins are suspected to be from about 2000 BC. The first fountains used in ancient civilizations depended on gravity to manipulate the movement of water through the fountain. Drinking water was delivered by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public statues, as attractive as they are functional. Fountains with decorative Gods, mythological beasts, and animals began to appear in Rome in about 6 B.C., built from natural stone and bronze. The Romans had an intricate system of aqueducts that supplied the water for the many fountains that were placed throughout the city.
