The Father Of Rome's Public Fountain Design There are many famous fountains in Rome’s city center. One of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, nearly all of them were designed, conceived and built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Marks of his life's work are apparent throughout the avenues of Rome simply because, in addition to his abilities as a water fountain builder, he was also a city architect. A renowned Florentine sculptor, Bernini's father mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome to fully exhibit their artwork, chiefly in the form of public water fountains and water features.
