Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Problems Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, started off supplying the many people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had depended on natural springs up until then. Over this time period, there were only 2 other technologies capable of delivering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. To supply water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they employed the new technique of redirecting the current from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel.
