One of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, nearly all of them were designed, conceived and constructed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Traces of his life's efforts are apparent all through the streets of Rome because, in addition to his skills as a water fountain designer, he was also a city architect. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. The young Bernini received praise from Popes and influential artists alike, and was an excellent employee. At first he was recognized for his sculpting skills. An authority in ancient Greek engineering, he utilized this knowledge as a base and melded it gracefully with Roman marble, most famously in the Vatican. He was influenced by many great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest impact on his work.
