Rome’s 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants living at higher elevations had to depend on natural creeks for their water. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only techniques readily available at the time to supply water to areas of high elevation. In the very early sixteenth century, the city began to use the water that flowed beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to provide water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. While these manholes were created to make it less difficult to conserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. The cistern he had made to obtain rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water requirements. To provide himself with a much more useful means to assemble water, he had one of the manholes opened, providing him access to the aqueduct below his property.
