"Primitive" Greek Art: Large Statuary

"Primitive" Greek Art: Large Statuary Up until the Archaic Greeks created the very first freestanding statuary, a remarkable achievement, carvings had mostly been accomplished in walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are referred to as kouros figures. Considered by Greeks to characterize skin care, the kouroi were structured into rigid, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, muscular, and athletic. In around 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized. Throughout the Archaic time, a great time of changes, the Greeks were evolving new sorts of government, expressions of art, and a greater awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. But in spite of the issues, the Greek civilization continued to advance, unabated.

Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Problems

Acqua Vergine: Answer Rome's Water Problems 756073034616.jpg Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Problems With the building of the very first raised aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, people who lived on the city’s foothills no longer had to rely entirely on naturally-occurring spring water for their demands. If people residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to be dependent on the other existing technologies of the day, cisterns that gathered rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground. In the very early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed below ground through Acqua Vergine to provide drinking water to Pincian Hill. The aqueduct’s channel was made available by pozzi, or manholes, that were positioned along its length when it was first created. While these manholes were manufactured to make it simpler and easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to extract water from the channel, which was carried out by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. He didn’t get adequate water from the cistern that he had constructed on his residential property to collect rainwater. To provide himself with a much more effective means to assemble water, he had one of the manholes opened, offering him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
