The Magificent First Wonders by Bernini
The Magificent First Wonders by Bernini Bernini's earliest fountain, named Barcaccia, is a masterful work of art found at the foot of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, this area is flooded with Roman locals and travelers alike who enjoy debate and each other's company. The streets neighboring his fountain have come to be one of the city’s most trendy gathering places, something which would certainly have pleased Bernini himself.
Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII mandated what was to be the earliest fountain of the artist's career. An enormous ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean is the fountain's central theme. Period writings dating back to the 16th century show that the fountain was built as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. In 1665, France was graced by Bernini's only prolonged voyage outside of Italy.

Throughout Europe, the principal means of spreading useful hydraulic understanding and fountain design ideas were the published papers and illustrated publications of the day, which added to the evolution of scientific innovation. In the later part of the 1500's, a French water feature developer (whose name has been lost) was the globally distinguished hydraulics innovator. With Royal commissions in Brussels, London and Germany, he started his work in Italy, acquiring knowledge in garden design and grottoes with incorporated and imaginative water hydraulics. In France, towards the closure of his lifetime, he penned “The Principle of Moving Forces”, a book that became the primary text on hydraulic technology and engineering. The publication updated crucial hydraulic advancements since classical antiquity as well as describing modern hydraulic technologies. Archimedes, the creator of the water screw, had his work featured and these integrated a mechanized way to move water. Sunlight heating up liquid in a couple of containers unseen in a room adjacent to an decorative water fountain was shown in one illustration. The heated liquid expands and then rises and closes the pipes thereby activating the water fountain. Models for pumps, water wheels, water attributes and outdoor ponds are also mentioned in the book.
