Statues As a Staple of Classic Art in Ancient Greece
Statues As a Staple of Classic Art in Ancient Greece Archaic Greeks were renowned for providing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs.
Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an amazing point of change for the Greeks as they extended into new forms of government, formed unique expressions of art, and gained insights of the people and cultures outside of Greece. During this time and other durations of historic tumultuousness, clashes often took place, including battles fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.
The Source of Modern Garden Fountains
The Source of Modern Garden Fountains Hundreds of ancient Greek documents were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope resolved to enhance the beauty of the city. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was reconditioned starting in 1453. Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had reconstructed.
