Aqueducts: The Solution to Rome's Water Problems Rome’s first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, citizens residing at higher elevations had to depend on local springs for their water. If inhabitants residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to be dependent on the other existing solutions of the day, cisterns that collected rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that drew the water from below ground. To furnish water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they applied the new strategy of redirecting the current from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. Pozzi, or manholes, were constructed at regular intervals along the aqueduct’s channel.
