The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But there was no time for home life, domesticated architecture, and decoration until the Normans had overcome the whole realm. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were massive stone structures constructed in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on understanding offensive and defensive strategies. Gardening, a peaceful occupation, was impracticable in these unproductive fortifications. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is portrayed in Berkeley Castle, which is conceivably the most unscathed illustration we have. It is said that the keep was developed during William the Conqueror's time. A large terrace meant for exercising and as a means to stop attackers from mining under the walls runs about the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an aged yew hedge trimmed into the figure of crude battlements.
