Water Transport Strategies in Historic Rome
Water Transport Strategies in Historic Rome Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, started off supplying the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, even though they had counted on natural springs up till then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technological innovations available at the time to supply water to spots of higher elevation. To furnish water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they employed the emerging strategy of redirecting the movement from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. The aqueduct’s channel was made reachable by pozzi, or manholes, that were installed along its length when it was 1st designed. While these manholes were provided to make it much easier to conserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. Though the cardinal also had a cistern to amass rainwater, it didn’t provide enough water. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his residence.Gian Bernini's Garden Fountains
