He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. Modifications and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Architectural Sculpture in Early Greece

Architectural Sculpture in Early Greece Most sculptors were remunerated by the temples to adorn the intricate columns and archways with renderings of the gods right up until the period came to a close and countless Greeks started to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more common for sculptors to represent ordinary men and women as well. Portraiture became widespread as well, and would be welcomed by the Romans when they conquered the Greeks, and on occasion affluent families would commission a representation of their progenitors to be placed inside their huge familial burial tombs. It is amiss to say that the arts had one function throughout The Classical Greek period, a time period of creative advancement during which the use of sculpture and alternative art forms evolved. Greek sculpture was a cutting-edge component of antiquity, whether the reason was religious fervor or visual satisfaction, and its modern excellence may be what endears it to us today.
