Water fountains will last a very long time with scheduled cleaning and maintenance. A common issue with fountains is that they tend to accumulate dirt and debris, so it is essential that you keep it free from this. On top of that, algae can be a concern, as sun hitting the water allows it to form quickly. Either sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar can be blended into the water to prevent this issue. Some people opt for adding bleach into the water, but the problem is that it harms wildlife - so it should be avoided. Every 3-4 months, garden fountains should go through a serious cleaning. Prior to cleaning, all of the water must be taken out. Then use a soft towel and gentle cleanser to scrub the inside. A helpful tip is to use a toothbrush if there are small hard-to-reach spots. Any soap residue left on your fountain can harm it, so be sure it is all rinsed off.
Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and scrubbing the inside carefully. Letting it soak in vinegar for a couple of hours first will make it much easier to clean. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain ingredients that will accumulate inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.
Finally, be sure to have a quick look at your fountain every day and add water if you notice that the level is depleted. Allowing the water level to get too low can cause damage to the pump - and you certainly don't want that!

The water which eventually furnished the Trevi Fountain as well as the renown baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
