From Where Did Water Fountains Emerge?
From Where Did Water Fountains Emerge? Hundreds of ancient Greek records were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his objectives. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had rebuilt.
The Garden Fountains
The Garden Fountains
As originally developed, fountains were crafted to be functional, directing water from creeks or aqueducts to the residents of towns and villages, where the water could be utilized for cooking food, washing, and drinking. To generate water flow through a fountain until the late 1800’s, and create a jet of water, demanded the force of gravity and a water source such as a creek or lake, situated higher than the fountain. Inspirational and spectacular, prominent water fountains have been constructed as monuments in nearly all societies. When you see a fountain nowadays, that is certainly not what the very first water fountains looked like. Created for drinking water and ceremonial purposes, the first fountains were very simple carved stone basins. The earliest stone basins are suspected to be from around 2000 BC. Early fountains used in ancient civilizations relied on gravity to control the circulation of water through the fountain. Drinking water was delivered by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public monuments, as beautiful as they are functional. Fountains with embellished Gods, mythological beasts, and animals began to appear in Rome in about 6 BC, built from natural stone and bronze. A well-engineered collection of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public fountains supplied with fresh water.
The Beautiful Early Masterpieces by Bernini
The Beautiful Early Masterpieces by Bernini Bernini's earliest fountain, named Barcaccia, is a breath taking work of art seen at the foot of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna.
To this day, this spot is flooded with Roman locals and travelers alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company. One of the city’s most fashionable gathering spots are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would undoubtedly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII mandated what was to be the earliest fountain of the artist's career. An enormous ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean is the fountain's central theme. Period writings dating back to the 16th century show that the fountain was built as a monument to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting time period, in 1665 Bernini voyaged to France.
