Attributes of Garden Sculpture in Archaic Greece The Archaic Greeks built the first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male figurines were regularly unclothed, with a compelling, powerful build. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more refined forms of federal government and art, and acquired more data about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. And yet these disputes did not prohibit the emergence of the Greek civilization. {
