Statues As a Staple of Classic Art in Historic Greece Up until the Archaic Greeks provided the first freestanding statuary, a phenomenal triumph, carvings had mostly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. Younger, appealing male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the statues, or kouros figures.
